Commercial Battery Storage Projects

C&I BESS Projects

Project Brief

In regions with limited central infrastructure, establishing a reliable, round-the-clock power supply is a significant hurdle for commercial growth. In South Sudan, where grid access is scarce and fuel costs for traditional diesel generators are exceptionally high, businesses are actively seeking modern infrastructure that combines renewable energy with traditional backup to achieve true power independence.

To address these critical energy demands, Dawnice recently deployed a state-of-the-art hybrid microgrid solution for a commercial project in South Sudan. The project features the Dawnice 125kW/265kWh Integrated PV-Storage-Genset Hybrid System (Model: BS07-265-ES-G), establishing a stable, self-sufficient energy ecosystem that radically lowers diesel consumption.

Background

The project site operates entirely off-grid in a remote region of South Sudan. Before the installation, the site relied on a complex set of operational constraints:

  1. High Fuel Costs and Supply Logistics: Operating on 100 percent diesel generation meant astronomical fuel bills and frequent supply chain disruptions due to the region’s remote geography.

  2. Unstable Off-Grid Power Quality: Relying solely on diesel generators created challenges with voltage dips and power quality under heavy mechanical loads, which risked damaging critical site electronics.

  3. Severe Weather and Environmental Demands: Facing extreme ambient temperatures that routinely exceed 40 degrees Celsius, the facility required a system built to withstand high heat without risking thermal failure.

Project Highlights

  • Advanced Multi-Mode Operation and Black Start Capability The Dawnice hybrid system functions across multiple operation modes, including grid-connected, islanding, and hybrid microgrid operations. Equipped with full black start capability, the microgrid can reboot itself independently from a complete power failure. Its smart hybrid power scheduling uses solar energy first, draws down the 265kWh battery bank next, and commands the diesel generator to fire up only when the battery state-of-charge drops to a critical threshold, guaranteeing 99.9 percent or greater system availability.

  • Heavy-Duty Thermal Management and Broad Operating Range Operating reliably in South Sudan requires rugged engineering. The system features a broad working temperature range of -30 to 55 degrees Celsius (with derating above 45 degrees Celsius). To combat the blistering local heat, the cabinet utilizes an intelligent air-cooling system that splits the load: a dedicated battery compartment air conditioner keeps the LiFePO4 cells at an ideal temperature, while a high-velocity electrical compartment fan keeps the power electronics cool.

  • Triple-Layer Security and Automatic Fire Suppression Commercial assets require top-tier protection. The battery architecture is built around an advanced battery safety system that provides triple-layer safety protection, real-time fault diagnosis, and multi-level thermal runaway prevention. Alongside this, the integrated fire protection system incorporates multi-sensor early warning detectors and an automatic aerosol suppression mechanism that boasts a response time of less than 500 milliseconds.

  • Flexible Load Handling and Phase Compensation Industrial site loads are often unpredictable. The Dawnice system handles this seamlessly by supporting a three-phase four-wire (3P4W) unbalanced load layout. It features dynamic phase compensation and allows for a 0.9 leading or lagging Power Factor (PF) adjustment, keeping the localized mini-grid stable even when heavy motors cycle on and off.
